Meet the Candidate

Courtney Weaks is running for Division 15 of the Second Judicial District Court in Bernalillo County as a Criminal Judge.

Judge Weaks currently holds the position of Metropolitan Court Judge, Division 4. Judge Weaks was nominated by a bi-partisan Judicial Nominating Commission, composed of judges, attorneys as well as non-lawyers, in the summer of 2013. Judge Weaks went on to win a general election in the Fall of 2014.

Currently, Weaks is the Presiding Judge of the Metropolitan Court’s Specialty Court Programs. There are currently thirteen different programs that focus on treatment and recovery targeted to address addiction, mental health diagnosis, homelessness, and domestic violence issues. These programs also serve specific populations such as the Community Veteran’s Court and the Urban Native American Healing to Wellness Court.

Judge Weaks also serves as an executive of Bernalillo County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council’s (BCCJCC) Subcommittee on Reintegration and Reentry. The purpose of this committee is to ensure that the most vulnerable members of our society that suffer from serious mental illness are being diverted from the criminal justice system. The goal is to identify these individuals and offer intensive case management and psychiatric services so they do not make future contact with the criminal justice system.

Judge Weaks was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM. Judge Weaks is a proud Jayhawk and a graduate of the University of Kansas, where she obtained an undergraduate degree in English Literature and graduated with distinction and with honors in 2004. She returned to the beloved Land of Enchantment to attend Law School, where she met her husband Jason and graduated in 2007.

Weaks began her career at the Second Judicial District Attorney’s office where she prosecuted criminal cases in Metropolitan Court, and went on to work in the Felony DWI Division, prosecuting subsequent DWI charges as well as vehicular homicide cases. Judge Weaks then entered private practice where she focused on criminal defense work, which included doing contract work for the Public Defender Department and family law.

She and her husband reside in the beautiful North Valley with their two-year-old daughter and their two corgis, Zeus and Oscar.
